Record Sales on Record Store Day

Stores report sales up more than 50% on last year

Noel Gallagher, Leonard Cohen and the Beatles top the sales rankings

23 April 2012: Initial feedback from Record Store Day shops show that Record Store Day 2012 on Saturday (April 21) beat all previous records.

• Vinyl sales reported to be up over 50% compared with Record Store sales last year;
• Some stores reported sales increases of over 100% compared to last year;
• Record Store Exclusives this week accounted for 7 of the Top 10 vinyl albums for the week, despite being on sale for just one day;
• All of the Top 10 physical singles this week are Record Store Day exclusives.
Record Store Day coordinator - and manager of one of UK's biggest indie stores Rough Trade East - Spencer Hickman said: "I can't believe just how busy RSD was again this year, there were queues round the block with fans both young and old enjoying the unique atmosphere indie stores provide ensuring that RSD has become the date music buyers are marking in their diaries. With vinyl sales again on the rise for the fifth year in a row indie record stores and RSD are proving to be more relevant than ever for the discerning music buyer."

Around 230 stores took part in this year's Record Store Day - 50 more than last year. There were around 450 exclusive releases only available in participating stores, almost double last year's number and hundreds of events were held around the country.

Alan Jordan of Reflex in Newcastle said, "RSD 2012 was the busiest, most buzzing day in my 30 years selling recorded music. An amazing experience I'm proud to be a part of!".

Lawrence Montgomery from Rise said: 'Record Store Day 2012 was a record day for all four Rise stores but it wasn't just about the sales - the atmosphere all day from 8am thru till 10pm was out of this world.  Customers, staff and bands all came together to put on a top notch day of performances.  Of course, the availability of the official Record Store Day Ale certainly helped out!'

The first person queuing was outside Square Records in Dorset at 11am the day before Record Store day to ensure he got the product he wanted.  Other stores reported queues around the block at opening, some of which did not clear until the stores closed that evening.

Independent Record Stores around the country were reporting the best days sale ever.
A detailed analysis of the sales will be undertaken once the in store exclusivity period ends at the end of this week.
