Moni Jitchell - AWARE LP

Moni Jitchell are Glasgow's only "backing track hardcore band", comprised of vocalist and drummer Grant Donaldson and 12-string guitarist David Scott. Both minimalistic and feral, their sound touches upon the brooding lurch of Chat Pile, the punk fury of The HIRS Collective, and the mangled electronics of Melt Banana. Moni Jitchells' new album ‘AWARE’ builds on the foundation set by Moni Jitchell on their 2023 debut LP ‘Unreal’. While ‘Unreal’ had mostly been written with the idea of a full live band eventually performing the songs, ‘AWARE’ is more settled into Moni Jitchell’s live format: one vocal microphone, one 12-string guitar, and everything else reproduced from the studio recordings. However, knowing ‘AWARE’ would be performed live in this way has only made it sound bigger, not smaller. The band have utilised more overdubs and layers, giving the songs greater depths and dynamics. David Scott's 12-string guitar is more musical and experimental this time round: less straight riffing and more subtle, almost synth-like string bends and chords, creating a stranger sound to manipulate in live performance.
